According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 6 in 10 Americans live with some form of chronic illness. Additionally, 4 in 10 live with more than one. Many people suffering from chronic illnesses do not look sick.
Invisible illnesses take a toll on those who live with them. When a person doesn’t look sick but suffers from chronic debilitating pain or constant fatigue it can be difficult for others to understand. Many people with chronic illness end up starting their own businesses because they are too sick to work a traditional job, but not sick enough in the eyes of the government to qualify for disability benefits.
